Jeff Reuss from the City of Benson gives his thoughts on his recent experience at this annual event.
Tell us a little about yourself and the job you do.
I am the new public works director for the City of Benson who oversees all city public utilities and the airport. I’ve been in the position for five months.
How did you first hear about the Minnesota Airports Conference?
From my predecessor. Being new to city administration and overseeing the airport as one of my job duties, it was in my best interest to attend the conference and see how airports are managed.
What made you decide to attend?
Knowing that I didn’t have any airport management experience and not knowing FAA rules and regulations. Attending the conference really opened my eyes. I met a lot of great people who are willing to help at any time. Drop an email or pick up the phone and they are glad to help.
What did you find most valuable about the conference?
How many great contacts you can reach out to with questions on grant applications, fuel suppliers, and engineering firms that can help make upgrades to your airport. In the breakout sessions, I was amazed how many people have the same questions and problems that I encounter.
Did you take anything back and use it at your airport?
A whole new wealth of knowledge. I always knew of the airport in the community, but it was never high on my radar. After attending the conference, it brought a whole new meaning to me and I’m hoping I can get the community more involved from what I learned.
What would you say to airport managers or other staff who are on the fence about attending?
I would highly recommend going to the airports conference. Whether a new person like myself or someone with many years of experience, you are guaranteed to learn something new. It also gives you time to visit with your colleagues and catch up with what’s new in the industry. After attending the 2025 conference, I plan on attending every year. The information given out at the conference will keep me on top of the ever-changing world we live in. Also, I can keep up to date on new grants that might help with airport improvements.
