Airport managers may come from different backgrounds and often wear many hats, but each one plays a key role in keeping Minnesota's aviation community running. Let's get to know one.

Tell us a little about yourself.

My journey in aviation has deep roots at Elbow Lake—I learned to fly at this airport back when it was a grass runway in the mid-1990s. That early experience not only fueled my passion for flying but also laid the groundwork for my career in aviation and mechanics. Today, my role encompasses overseeing all aspects of our operations, from strategic planning and facility development to leading a talented team of aviation professionals.

What made you decide to get into airport management?

As a teenager in central Minnesota’s agricultural heartland, I earned my pilot’s license and worked crop-spraying for local farmers. That experience gave me a firsthand appreciation for the important role aviation plays in supporting agriculture and rural communities.

Tell us about your expertise with helicopter maintenance and travel around the nation. How did that come to be?

It began with Columbia Helicopters, where I had the opportunity to travel extensively across the United States, working on various airframes and engines. That provided me with hands-on exposure to a wide range of maintenance challenges, from complex repairs to routine inspections, across different environments and operating conditions.

That foundation eventually led to the creation of Prairie Air Inc., where we’ve built a reputation as a trusted leader in helicopter maintenance. Today, we are a certified Robinson Helicopter Service Center and have grown to serve clients across the nation. Our team has extensive experience working with both Robinson and Bell helicopters, offering expert technical support, parts sourcing, and troubleshooting services.

Who are some influential people in your career path? People you admire?

My dad was one of the most influential people in my life and career. He introduced me to flying at a young age, taking me to airshows and getting me in the air early on. He also played a significant role in nurturing my mechanical skills by involving me in the shop on our family farm, where I learned through hands-on experience and developed a deep appreciation for how things work.

What is your favorite accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment is being a good husband and father to our two kids. Being present for my family, supporting them, and setting an example of hard work, dedication, trust, and strong values is something I take immense pride in. Success isn’t just measured by professional achievements but by the effort, character, and values you bring to everything you do.

How is your airport engaged with the local community?

Elbow Lake Municipal Airport (also known as Pride of the Prairie Airport) plays a vital role in connecting and supporting our local community. Over the years, we’ve undertaken several major projects to enhance our facilities, including the construction of a multi-aircraft storage hangar and the expansion of our fixed base operator (FBO) building.

We partner with the Ashby American Legion Auxiliary Unit #357 to host the annual “Wheels, Tracks & Wings” event every April at Prairie Air Inc. Additionally, we work closely with EAA Chapter 1174 to offer Young Eagles flights, providing free airplane rides to every local ninth-grade student. We also welcome local technical schools for tours and demonstrations, giving students an up-close look at aviation careers and maintenance operations.

Do you have any funny or surprising aviation stories while working or talking to others?

One Saturday morning, a man walked into our shop looking for a helicopter mechanic. At first glance, he looked rough and I initially wondered if he might be homeless—his clothes were worn, and his shoes were held together with tape. I took the time to talk with him and he was anything but what I initially thought. He was an accomplished pilot, aircraft owner, and Robinson helicopter enthusiast returning from a long sailing trip. Over time, he became one of our best customers and, more importantly, someone who significantly influenced my business perspective. It was a great reminder of how powerful first impressions can be—and how important it is to take the time to truly connect with people.

What other hobbies and interests do you have outside aviation?

Spending quality time with my family is something I truly value. I enjoy hiking, fishing, and boating, whether it’s exploring trails, spending a peaceful morning on the water, or just working in the yard together. Our dogs often join in on these adventures, but it’s about creating meaningful experiences with family, making memories, and enjoying the simple things that keep life balanced.
